The ever-changing nature of water interpreted by composers ranging from Debussy and Smetana to Tan Dun.

Program -
Tan Dun - Concerto for Water Percussion
Bedrich Smetena - Moldau from Ma Vlast (My Country)
Steven Heitzeg - Aqua (Homage to Jacques-Yves Cousteau)
Claude Debussy - La Mer (The Sea)

Like an impressionist painting, musical works with their infinite variations depict the ever-changing nature of water perfectly. The expressive percussionist, Christopher Lamb, performs Tan Dun’s Water Concerto, a theatrical piece calling for dramatic lighting and incorporating unique percussion instruments that produce sound using water. Bedrich Smetena’s Moldau paints a vivid portrait of a mighty river from source to end while La Mer, composed by Claude Debussy, focuses on images of the sea, from gentle swells and sparkling surfaces to the crashing of breakers on the shore. In Aqua, Steve Heitzeg celebrates the natural world and commemorates the visionary spirit of ocean explorer, Jacques Cousteau.

Guest Artist -
Hailed as a dynamic and versatile performer, Christopher Lamb joined the New York Philharmonic as Principal Percussionist in 1985 and has been on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music since 1989. Mr. Lamb gave the first world premiere of Dun’s Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra, which he performed to rave reviews on the Philharmonic’s tour to South America, Asia and Europe.
